NECK PAIN : When undue strain isn’t placed on your neck, its vertebrae and muscles do a pretty good job of holding up your head. But your head weighs for about 4 or 5 kilos which are pretty heavy load sitting on a relatively small structure. A common cause of neck pain is holding your hand in an awkward position for a longer duration.  

Some people have this due to their occupation, who are at more risk than the others. Hairdressers work in a bent-over position all day long. Whatever your job or lifestyle, neck pain can be eased by replacing bad habits with good and giving your neck regular exercise. And most of the headaches arising from the neck and shoulders. So looking after your neck and your head will thank you too. 

  1. Use ice: – Ice helps to reduce swelling, so it is a good choice when stiffness settles in. If your neck has been slightly injured you can apply an ice pack which is wrapped in thin cloth to protect your skin for at least 15 minutes. Repeat it after every few hours as needed.
  1. Use heat: – After the ice has reduced its inflammation, heat is a wonderful soother. You can try a heating pad or a hot shower.
  1. Press on the painful spot: – Relieve muscle tension by applying moderate pressure to the area for three minutes. Don’t press as hard as you can but use your fingertips to exert steady, constant pressure on the affected point. After 3 minutes, your pain should have improved dramatically.
  1. Take a painkiller: – OTC anti-inflammatories such as aspirin or ibuprofen will help to reduce pain and inflammation. Simple analgesics like paracetamol are not as much effective but if you can’t take anti-inflammatories, they will certainly help and if your pain is particularly cad you can combine two of them rather than exceeding the daily recommended dose of either.
  1. Take essential fatty acids: – Essential fatty acids which are found in certain plant oils, make our body less prone to inflammation and thus therefore helpful in reducing neck pain. Flaxseed or linseed is one such oil which contains alpha-linolenic acid, a substance which is very similar to omega-3 fatty acids which are found in a fish. Take two teaspoons in a day. Some of the other options include evening primrose oil, borage oil, blackcurrant seed oil and hempseed oil. ‘Hempseed oil is the best all around essential fatty acid seed oil’. ‘A teaspoon in a day is plenty’. But never expect instant relief as three oils can take several weeks to work and should be seen as a long-term investment in reducing your symptoms. 
  1. If you like it fishy: – Oily fish which includes salmon, trout, mackerel, herring and sardines contain omega-3 fat. Among other health benefits, these fats have a natural anti-inflammatory substance that can help to relieve the pain of arthritis and prevent the condition from becoming worse. Daily supplements are a suitable alternative if you cannot eat oily two or three times a week. A recent study suggested that at least 750 mg daily dose is sufficient as long as each side contains 3 mg of vitamin E, although some sources suggest far higher doses are necessary to see a positive effect.
  1. Turn to herbs: – Neck pain can arise from an old or new injury or can be from a muscle spasm. Herbal medicine offers remedies in both instances. For inflammation try taking white willow bark. Just like aspirin, white willow reduces inflammation and makes the moving of neck much easier. For tension-related neck cramp, try valerian or cramp bark. You can get all these from health food stores and should be taken accordingly.
  1. Give glucosamine a try: – Some of the evidence suggest that this natural sugar substance may help to relieve pain in osteoarthritic joints.
  1. Take your vitamins:- Antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C and E when taken on a regular basis can help to prevent the painful deterioration of joints in your neck and elsewhere in your body.
  2. Sit on a firm chair: – Sitting on the chai without good back support can make your neck problems, even more, worse and even can give rise to a new one.
  1. Support your lower back: – Roll up a towel and place it against the small of your back when sitting. It will align your spine and provides support.
  1. Take a break: – In a similar way just like the feet needs rest from constant sitting, so periodically stand up and walk around.
  1. Keep your chin up: – Keep your head level but pull your chin in as if you were making a double chin and also avoid lowering your head all the time while working on at a desk or reading. This helps to prevent straining the muscles in the back of the neck.
  1. Position your screen: – If you used to look at the computer monitor all the day so position it at eye level. Don’t force yourself to look up or down an hour after hours your neck may spasm.
  1. Get a telephone headset:- When you hold the telephone in the crook of your neck and shoulder so that you can talk and write at the same time puts your neck in an awkward position which gives an invitation to stiffness and pain.
  1. Sleep on a firm mattress:- A lot of neck problems begin and worsen with poor sleeping habits that put the spine out of alignment. Having a firm mattress is very important.
  1. Get rid of your pillow: – A lot of people with neck pain feel better sleeping flat without a pillow.
  1. Buy a cervical pillow: – You can easily avail them from specialist supply medical store and online as they give proper support.
  1. Don’t sleep on your stomach: – This is bad not only for your back but also for your neck. You can instead sleep on your fetal position – on your side with your knees up towards the chest.

However, spondylitis is not bound by the ageing factor. The disease is caused due to inflammation, that is, due to our immune system. Spondylosis is a disease caused due to the natural phenomenon of ageing and/or genetics. The disease results in the wear and tear of the spinal vertebrates, causing rigidity in the spine. This process is not restricted to one vertebra, rather, it keeps on spreading and affecting the vertebrates. It is commonly misinterpreted to be spondylitis while both of them have nothing similar to the sound of their names.


In layman’s language, neck arthritis is popularly known as cervical spondylosis. The wear and tear of the tissues in the cervical region, i.e. the neck leads to the cause of this disease. Cervical spondylosis is often a result of the ageing process where the muscles tend to go weak and tissues tear apart affecting the intervertebral disc. What Causes Cervical Spondylosis?

CERVICAL LYMPH NODES – Spine is an integral part of the nervous system. Of the many parts a spine can be divided into, cervical is a term used to refer to the beginning of a spinal cord. 

A lot many problems are associated with the spine. One such condition which when spoken with regards to the cervical region is known is cervical lymphadenopathy.

Sounds difficult, but is easy to understand. Left untreated and it may cause you your life. Facts show that above the age of 40, there’s a 4 percent chance of it being cancerous.


Meaning of the key terms:

  • Cervical region of the spine: This is the top most region of the spinal cord. In layman’s terms, the cervical spine is a reference to the neck region that is immediately below the skull. It consists of 7 vertebrae ranging from C1 to C7. Fun fact: two of them actually have names – C1 being called ‘atlas’ and C2 being called ‘axis’.
  • Cervical Lymph nodes: Given that the human body has lymph nodes in all the direction regions of the body, their presence in the spine is no surprise. Lymph nodes are like the soldiers of the lymphatic system, that transmit fluid containing while blood cells or as they are scientifically called lymphocytes. The cervical lymph node, like any other, is a barrier against infections. Lymph nodes are necessary for the proper functioning of the body. When large in number, they are referred to as the cervical group of lymph nodes.
  • Cervical lymphadenopathy: It refers to swelling or enlargement of the lymph nodes.



This condition of swelling of cervical lymph nodes is known as lymphadenopathy. There are many reasons for the swelling of the cervical lymph nodes. Few of the most common causes listed below as: 

  • The local causes:
  1. Infection: Infection is the primary reason for the swelling of the cervical lymphs.  The presence of infection causing pathogens is followed by the accumulation of white blood cells in the region. Bronchitis, common cold , salivary gland infection, dental infection can be a few types.
  • The systemic causes:
  1. Cancer: In a few cases, the swelling points out cancer. These cancers are called lymphomas. If the situation holds true, one may experience fever, fatigue, abnormal weight loss and the presence of enlarged lymph nodes.
  2. Autoimmune disorder: Many autoimmune disorders like Lupus can be a reason for the swelling. Kawasaki disease is another most prevalent cause of lymphadeno[athy in kids. 
  3. Other chronic infections: Infections like Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome commonly known as AIDS, pulmonary tuberculosis are few of the many that can cause swelling of lymph nodes.


This condition is divided into six distinct cervical lymph nodes levels depending upon the site of malignancy:

  • Submental and submandibular group: 
    1. Level 1A: lower lip, floor of mouth, lower gum
    2. Level 1B: face, nose, oral cavity, submandibular gland and paranasal sinuses
  • Upper internal jugular group: oral cavity, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, supraglottic larynx
  • Middle internal jugular group: thyroid, larynx, hypopharynx, supraglottic larynx
  • Lower internal jugular group: thyroid, larynx, hypopharynx, cervical esophagus
  • Posterior triangle group: nasopharynx, thyroid, esophagus, lungs, breast
  • Central or anterior compartment: lower lip, oral cavity, thyroid, glottic and subglottic larynx, apex of pyriform sinus, cervical esophagus

Spinal Stenosis – Spine is a very delicate and complex part of the human body and so are the problems associated with it.

By connecting the brain to all the parts of the body with the help of the nerves running through it, the spinal cord plays an integral part in the nervous system.

However, with the passage of time and oneself growing old, not one, but there are many hindrances that may block the path of an effective nervous system. 

One such condition that needs to be addressed is spinal stenosis.


Spinal stenosis is a condition wherein the inner spaces within the spine that are responsible for compressing the nerves they carry, narrow.  These spinal nerves carry signals from the brain to all the other parts of the body. Naturally, this condition has a huge impact on the functioning of the body.

Spinal canal stenosis is also known as pseudoclaudication. The condition is believed to be more prominent in the old people. Besides, it mostly happens in the neck and the lower back.

The diagnosis for the same happens through X-ray, MRI as well as CT scan or myelogram.


There are two types of spinal stenosis:

  • Lumbar spinal stenosis: Lumbar can be closely associated with the word ‘lower. This helps in understanding the meaning of it.  Lumbar spinal stenosis is a condition that involves narrowing of the spinal canal compressing the nerves travelling through the lower back to the legs.
  • Cervical spinal stenosis: Cervical is a reference to the top-most region of the spine right below the skull. Cervical spinal stenosis is a condition wherein  the spinal canal is situated in the neck. Cervical spine  represents seven distinct vertebrae from the top. 


Given that it is most common among the older generation, it seems like age is the biggest factor behind the condition. 

  1. Overgrowth of bone: Medically known as osteoarthritis is a condition that involves “wear and tear” condition of the cartilage in the spine. This results in the occurrence of bone spurs that spread to the spinal canal, thus causing narrowing of the space.
  2. Thickened ligaments: Arthritis can cause damage to the ligaments – cords that connect the bones in the spine. They become stiff and thicken over a period of time thus bulging into the spinal canal and narrowing the space.
  3. Spinal injuries: Slip disc is one of the most famous spinal injuries known worldwide. Accidents are the reason behind most of these injuries as well as fractures. The inflammation thus caused can narrow the canal.
  4. Herniated or bulging disk: A vertebral disk is a cushion padding between each vertebrae that acts as a shock absorber. With age, they either dry out or flatten. In case of any injuries on the outer parts of the disk, results in the escape of the gel-like center thus causing the disk bulges into the canal and pressing the spinal nerves. 
  5. Tumors and cysts: abnormal growths in the spine, between the vertebrae can narrow the spinal canal.
  6. Congenital spinal stenosis: Being born with a small spinal canal can also be a reason for many other people. 


The spinal stenosis’ symptoms vary depending upon its type. These symptoms may become a lifelong complication in certain cases.

  • Symptoms for Lumbar spinal stenosis: 
  1. Pain and weakness in the lower parts of the body – pelvis, legs, calves etc.
  2. Numbness in the lower region of the body.
  3. Cramps in the lower body while walking or standing for a long time.
  4. Sciatica – A type of pain that originates in the buttocks and continues down the legs reaching the foot.
  5. In rare and severe cases, one may lose bowel and bladder control.
  • Symptoms for Cervical spinal stenosis: 
  1. Pain in the neck.
  2. Numbness and weakness primarily in the upper body – arms, hands. Can also spread to points beneath the affected region.
  3. Problem in maintaining balance.
  4. Malfunctioning of the upper body causing trouble in daily activities like writing etc.
  5. In rare and severe cases, one may lose bowel and bladder control.
  6. Sciatica – A type of pain that originates in the buttocks and continues down the legs reaching the foot.
  7. Foot drop – Weakness in the lower part of the body, particularly the legs. This causes slappin of the foot on the ground. 
  8. A hard time standing or walking. When you’re upright, it tends to compress the vertebrae, causing pain.
  9. Cauda equina syndrome – A  section at the bottom of the spinal cord if compressed may result in numbness in the pelvic area. It is a medical emergency.



The treatment for spinal stenosis can be divided into three pain parts:

Home remedies: The treatment for any disease or disorder starts at home. There are number of things that can be done in addition to the treatment provided by e medical professional

    1. Exercise daily : Exercise does not mean to exert pressure on the spin. Consult  a doctor and include soft exercises in the daily routine. 
    2. Lose weight: Staying healthy and having an appropriate weight according to the age and height, can make things a lot easier. 
    3. Apply heat and cold: Heat helps in loosening the muscles while cold helps in healing inflation. Using either of the two can help in the treatment.
    4. Practicing a good posture : Bad posture is an underlying reason behind so many spinal problems. By maintaining a good posture, the treatment becomes more effective.  

Non-surgical medications: Anything besides surgery is part of this treatment.

  1. Anti-inflammatory medications to reduce swelling and pain. In case of mild pain, medications like aspirin, naproxen or acetaminophen can be used without prescription. In severe cases, medical advice is necessary. 
  2. Epidural injections that help in reduction of the swelling.
  3. Steroids such as corticosteroids can help in healing inflammation.
  4. Antidepressants can help in treating chronic pain.
  5. Muscle relaxants can be necessary for controlling muscle spasms.
  6. Anesthetics: These can help in blocking the pain in the nerves for a time.
  7. Physical therapy: This can help in gaining spinal strength and improve balance. Physical therapy happens under the guidance of a therapist.

Surgery: Surgery becomes a must in cases where the above stated treatment does not offer any improvement and things become unbearable. In certain cases, people tend to lose their bowel and bladder control besides having problems with sexual functioning. These are the most famous surgeries:

  1. Laminectomy to remove the affected part of the vertebrae.
  2. Laminotomy to carve a hole to relieve the pressure in the affected region. 
  3. Decompression procedure: This is specifically applicable to lumbar spinal stenosis. It involves removal of a section of the thickened ligament in order to create some space in the spinal canal.
  4. Laminoplasty: The use of metal plates and screws takes place to create a bridge across the section from which the lamina is removed. 
  5. Foraminotomy: Removal of bone or tissue from the area to create more space for the nerve root exit.
  6. Spinal fusion surgery involves permanent joining of two vertebrae together that are held together using screws and rods and other equipment. 


While these may be the only way out of the problem, there are a certain complication associated with the treatments. 

Spinal stenosis is a complex problem. Not treating it can be worse than bearing the side effects of the treatments. Numbness, weakness, paralysis, failure in healing, additional surgeries, failure related to the screws, wires and rods used in the surgery – are few of the many complications that may arrive your way post treatment.

Spinal Shock – The spine is a delicate part of the human body. It is very essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system. 

How would you ever know what to do if it wasn’t for the spine that connects the brain with the entire human body? That’s right! It wouldn’t.

Spinal cord injury is a well known concept even amongst the non-medical folks. The name says enough for itself. What is unknown to the people is the threats it poses. There are various repercussions of a spinal injury that renders a man incapable of functioning properly. Even if they are temporary, they can turn the world upside-down. One such problem worth learning about is a spinal shock



Spinal shock is a syndrome that involves a temporary or permanent loss of sensation and reflex below the level of injury on the spinal cord. It is not exactly a ‘shock’ in the circulatory collapse, but more of a state of depressed spinal reflexes.

Spinal shock is actually a combination of several neurological concerns  and reflexes that include autonomic dysfunction and hyporeflexia or as in some cases areflexia. 

Unlike the injury that happens spontaneously, spinal shock syndrome, generally, progresses over the hours.

The severity of the spinal shock is directly proportional to the severity of the injury. 

A point worth mentioning – Spinal shocks hold a lot of similarity with neurogenic shocks. The cause for both the syndromes is the same.


The two syndromes are distinct on the basis of the differences between their respective effects on the body. 

While spinal shock involves the disruption of the connection between peripheral neurons and brain stimuli causing loss of sensation and reflexes, neurogenic shock is more about the disruption of the autonomic pathways.

In simple terms, neurogenic shock vs spinal shocks can be differentiated as the one that affects the entire nervous system versus the one that affects only the spinal cord and its functions.

Generally, the occurrence of neurogenic shock is limited to the cervical spinal cord (above T6).


Spinal shock is divided in 4 stages depending on the days after the injury:

  • Zero to two days:
    Phase 1:  The patient may experience areflexia or hyporeflexia. It involves partial or complete loss of reflexes and muscle flaccidity.
  • One to three days:
    Phase 2: This stage involves returning or certain reflexes. In the elderly as well as children, DTR may remain absent. 
  • One to four weeks:
    Phase 3: This stage involves the reappearance of DTR in the body. Hyperreflexia occurs. 
  • One to twelve months:
    Phase 4: This stage, known as the final stage of hyperreflexia, is the longest in terms of duration. Neuron cells undergo changes.


Spinal shock has a variety of symptoms in the body. These symptoms appear as the shock progresses which means at different stages of the syndrome, different symptoms are visible.The symptoms may differ from person to person.

  1. Low heart rate
  2. Increased blood pressure
  3. Flaccid paralysis
  4. Irregularities in the response from vasomotor
  5. Skin becomes pale
  6. Increased perspiration
  7. Urine retention
  8. Bowel inconsistency

The vertebrae in the chest region are called thoracic vertebrae. There are twelve bones in the thoracic region. Whereas the vertebrae bones in your neck area are called cervical vertebrae. The cervical vertebrae consist of seven bones. 


As mentioned above, cervical vertebrae are related to the neck region, and thoracic vertebrae are related to the chest region. So, what are cervical ribs? Let us get an idea.


  • The cervical rib is an extra rib or bone structure that starts growing from the neck, above the collar bone, or the first rib. 
  • It might be tissues or a fully developed bone structure. 
  • The cervical rib might grow on the left, right, or on both sides. 
  • It is joint with the first rib. 
  • 0.5% of kids are born with a cervical rib and 1/10th of those kids develop the thoracic outlet syndrome. 



Everything comes in varieties, unfortunately even diseases and conditions. Cervical rib types are mainly four based on their development or placement. 

  • The first type of cervical rib is a complete one. It is fully structured and developed bones that are joint to the first rib.
  • The second type of cervical rib is incomplete and completely fibrous, it is distally attached through fibers.
  • The third type of cervical rib is also incomplete with a free tip.
  • The fourth type of cervical rib is a short piece of bone extending beyond the C7 process.


Cervical rib symptoms include pain in your neck area which might reach your arms, tingling sensation and even loss of feeling. The symptoms are common and you might be able to tell that there is an issue in your body that needs to be discussed. Symptoms might be consistent like pain or might come and go.

  • NECK STRETCH (FORWARD) This exercise is meant to tense and relax your neck muscles in the forward direction. Sit with your back straight and pull your chin forward in a way that it would stretch your throat, hold that position for a few seconds and then relax. 
  • NECK TOUCH DOWN For this exercise, the chin is supposed to touch the area between your chest and collar bone and that posture would remain for a few seconds then you could relax your muscles again.
  • NECK BENDING (SIDES) For this exercise you are required to gently touch your ear to your shoulder, hold that position and then relax after a few seconds. 
  • NECK TURNING (SIDE-BY-SIDE) This is probably familiar to most of you, all thanks to P.T. classes in school. Turn your neck to both sides, as far as it seems comfortable, and then gently return. For this, the chin is preferably parallel to the shoulder.
  • NECK RETRACTIONLaying on a flat rigid surface (without a pillow or any other support) could prove extremely beneficial. Slightly pushing your chin, pressurizes your neck in the correct straight posture that eventually helps. 
  • STRAIGHTENING POSTURE (USING A CHAIR) Sitting straight on a chair (preferably one without back support) and your legs comfortably on the floor being a little apart would also help with correcting the neck-related issues and decrease the pain if done consistently. 
  • RAISING A LEG If you already tried the last exercise, this one just needs a slight change. In the same, straight seated posture, raise one leg completely parallel to the floor. It is fine if you cannot hold it or raise it completely parallel on the first attempt, give it time and practice. 
  • SHOULDER RETRACTIONThis also requires you to sit straight on a chair and place your hands on your waist, making a 90 degrees angle at the elbow. After this, try bringing both your elbows towards each other as much as you could, hold it and relax.
  • RETRACTION USING A TOWEL This is similar to the neck turning exercise but adding a towel could help even more by adding the pressure to the right area. Just put a towel or any cloth around your neck like a scarf and stretch both its ends to insert pressure at the back of your neck and then turn your head.
  • NECK ROTATION Gently rotating your head also helps with tensing and relaxing your muscles in every direction and strengthens your muscles.

Cervical Lordosis – The backbone or the spine extends from the neck to the lower back where the tail bone ends. In medical terms, an abnormal inward or concave curvature of the spine in the neck is known as Cervical lordosis. But the word ‘lordosis’ is also used to refer to the normal curvature of the neck i.e cervical lordosis and lumbar lordosis when referring to the lumbar region specifically. Therefore a loss of cervical lordosis would mean a loss in the natural curvature of the spine extending into the neck.

The abnormal curvature is not always necessarily inward. The cervical region can have an outward curvature or a straightened one as well.



There can be numerous reasons for developing abnormalities in the cervical curvature. The most probable reasons for loss of cervical lordosis may be:

  • Due to repetitive injuries or accidents damaging the neck vertebrae
  • Due to incorrect standing and posture
  • Due to activities that involve lifting heavy weights frequently
  • Due to incurring injuries during birth

It is a very tricky task to identify symptoms of loss of cervical lordosis because the damage is not localized. It can spread down, damaging the whole length of the spine.   • The Philadelphia collar
    A Philadelphia collar is made from a set of two stiff foams that are attached to the sides with the help of velcro. The upper part of the collar helps in supporting the lower part of the jaw and the brace reaches down to support the thoracic region of the backbone. It covers a greater area than the collars mentioned above and therefore the scope of movement while wearing this is also very limited. It helps in the speedy recovery of the spine after undergoing cervical spine surgery. It is also beneficial in stabilizing less severe spinal fractures and reduction in pain in the strained neck muscles.
  • The Halo
    It is the most inflexible variant of cervical collars. It prevents the movement of both the neck as well as the head. Therefore, the halo is only used in the case of the most severe cases of spinal injury. It helps in stabilizing the fractures which are incurred in the vertebral regions of the cervix (neck) and the thorax( set of 12 vertebrae right below the cervical region)


  • Sterno-occipital-mandibular immobilization device or SOMI
    It serves the function of keeping the neck in perfect alignment with the spine most efficiently. It is very rigid and allows almost no movement at all. The brace helps in supporting the neck by demobilizing the head and the neck. The Sterno-occipital-mandibular immobilization device has a chest plate in the front with bars to go over the shoulders on both sides. Straps are attached to secure the bars tightly. There are bars to support the back though. Additional supports for the chin and the head with SOMI cervical neck collar provided for extra support if required. It is an excellent option for all moderate to severe cases of cervical disorders. Doctors prescribe it mostly in cases where the patient is experiencing pain for a very long time as in the case of chronic neck pain or rheumatoid arthritis.
